Comcast Digital Voice
I geeked out today and switched my phone service over to Comcast, my cable provider. We already have cable tv and high speed internet, so there are decent discounts to be had in adding a third service. Currently our local phone plus long distance is almost $60 a month, and with Comcast's service it's only $40.
The install was pretty seamless. It might have been more involved, but I didn't need them to get all the house's phone jacks working, since we use a cordless system with a base station. (The house only has 4 jacks, and they're in stupid places.) So all they did was replace the cable modem with a slightly bigger unit that takes its place and does the phone service, too. I just plugged the cordless base station into it and voila. It also has an internal battery backup in case the power goes out. (In which case I'm still screwed since the cordless system needs power to work.)
We didn't even have to change our phone number. If we had, I probably wouldn't have done it, despite the savings. I can even listen to my voice mail via a web interface. How geeky is that?
